History:
The Dietz No. 2 D-Lite was introduced in 1919 as a more affordable version of the original D-Lite lantern, combining features from the D-Lite and No. 2 Wizard models. It was a popular and successful model until 1947 when it was replaced by the streamlined D-Lite.
Design:
These lanterns have a side-lifting globe for easy access to the wick. The globe often features "LOC-NOB" ears to prevent it from falling out when tilted.
Construction:
The lantern is made of steel and features a clear glass globe. It uses kerosene or standard lamp oil as fuel.
Function:
The lantern is designed to enclose the flame completely, preventing it from blowing out, while allowing air circulation through tubes to create a convection that makes the flame glow brighter and smoother.
Markings:
The base of the lantern often has markings such as "DIETZ NEW YORK, U.S.A." on one side and "No 2 D-LITE" on the other. The glass globe may also have embossed lettering.
Use:
These lanterns were commonly used for railroad work and transportation. Red globes were used to signal stop or danger.
Production:
While originally made in the U.S., production moved to Hong Kong in 1971 and later to China.
