The Dorset Regiment was a line infantry regiment of the British Army in existence from 1881 to 1951, Until 1951, it was formally called the Dorsetshire Regiment, although usually known as "The Dorsets".
This WWII Military Hat Badge measures 1 7/8" x 1 3/4", and is constructed of silver and gold-tone metal with a secure clip back.
Badge symbols include Gibraltar Castle surmounted with a Marabout Sphinx, surrounded by the Waterloo wreath. Sphinx refers to the regiment's service in Egypt during the Napoleonic Wars. The motto, "Marabout" below the sphinx refers to the capture of Fort Marabout in Egypt in 1801.
Below the Castle is the phrase, "Primus in India" (First in India), in reference to the regiment's victory at Plassey in 1757.
