This is an iconic cold-shoulder stretch-knit purple sweater from DKNYC. In addition to it being a fun, flattering, comfortable, and versatile sweater, it’s an awesome piece of fashion history.
1948: Donna Karan is born in Queens, NY to a suit tailor and a showroom fashion model.
1974: After starting as an intern, Karan becomes Head Designer at Anne Klein.
1982: Karan introduces Anne Klein II, one of the1st lower-priced designer “bridge” lines.
1984: She starts her own company, Donna Karan New York.
1985: The debut of Seven Easy Pieces is ground-breaking -- a mixable, flexible group of chic, basic clothes.
1987: Karan is one of the 1st designers to use stretch fabrics.
1988: Karan starts DKNY, a less-expensive "fun" clothing line for younger women. DKNY soon transforms into a lifestyle empire, with a range of spin-off labels, incl DKNYC.
1992: The “cold shoulder” dress debuts. WWD knocks it. Then Liza Minnelli wears it to the Academy Awards, looking fabulous.
1993: Hillary Clinton wears Donna Karan's cold-shoulder dress at the White House. “No matter your age or size, your shoulders always look good."
That was the start of the now-ubiquitous cold shoulder. Also, Karan always favored purple, so incl the stretch and spinoff, this sweater embodies four of Donna Karan’s big contributions to the world of fashion.
