"Always different, always good.'' It was a time when phone numbers consisted of four digits. Clover Ice Cream, via Maryland Ice Cream Co., was delivered at times by primitive electric trucks in the city almost a century before electric vehicles would become commonplace in America and the world. The company was eventually purchased by Borden Company of New York and it's place in Mid-Atlantic would fade with time. Borden, which was at one time the largest U.S. producer of dairy, expanded rapidly by buying numerous dairies and ice cream manufacturers. Clover Ice Cream was producing such unique flavors as frozen plum pudding and Plombiere, a French ice cream made with almond extract, kirsch and candied fruit. It was a part of Baltimore, which is considered the birthplace of commercial ice cream production.
