It's possible that this Quing dynasty (1644-1911) soapstone brush pot came from the Fujian province near the Shoushan village in northern Fujian. Shoushan village is located near the Shoushan Mountain where stone is mined from. Shoushan stone production reached its peak during the Quing Dynasty.
This brush pot most likely was used to clean scholar brushes, store brushes, and store other miscellaneous items.
This brush pot is a stunning piece of Chinese artistry. It came from the renowned gallery (Potala Palace) several years ago. The exact age of the brush pot is unknown; however, the characteristics of this brush pot indicate that it is an antique piece, probably from the mid to late Chinese Quing Dynasty (11644-1911).
The brush pot is comprised of several colors of off-white, beige, red, and brown soapstone. It is hand crafted into a cylinder shape. Several layers of different colors and varying designs make this brush pot one-of-a-kind. There are three etched rings on the brush pot: a lip ring at the top, a center ring, and a bottom ring.
The brush pot approximate dimensions and other features are as follows:
Material: Soapstone; Height: 4 inches; Top Diameter: 1 3/4 inches; Bottom Diameter: 1 3/4 inches; Depth: 1/4 inch; Circumference (the perimeter of a circle): 6 1/2 inches at widest center area; Ounces Weight: 9.296 ounces; Grams Weight: 263.6 grams; Carats Weight: 1,317.5 carats; Age: Quing Dynasty (1644-1795).
