Dichroic glass is manufactured to change colors under different ambient lighting & angles. The word dichroic comes from the Greek: “di” = two & “chroma” = colors. The name refers to the way in which the glass can shift colors. Dichroic glass dates back as far as the fourth century AD. This ancient color-changing glass has very few surviving examples, but the most famous is the “Lycurgus Cup” of ancient Rome. In the modern era, dichroic glass came from research conducted by NASA. Their creation was deemed “chameleon glass”, and it was intended to protect astronauts from the negative effects and harsh glare of unfiltered sunlight. In dichroic filters, the coated glass also acts to shield cosmic radiation. These fantastic studs have faceted rainbow iridescent chameleon/dichroic teardrops forming the two upper butterfly wings with ripples that resemble the water refraction/caustics of a swimming pool. The bottom wings are formed by clear crystal faceted teardrops. Small circular clear crystals with four prong gold settings sit in between the wings. They have an open/hollow center.
