This cabinet card comes from the New York Gerster / Fox estate.
This photo is of AUSTEN HOPPIN FOX (1877-1946)
This photo is not identified on the back, but matches known photos of these children, and appears to be taken the same day as a photo that is dated May 1884. This great image features a a young Austen wearing a Norfolk knee pants suit with an Eton collar and small bow. He is seated on a decorative fence/ledge and holding a riding crop. His gaze is off the the side away from the camera.
The photographer of this image: Rockwood, 17 Union Square NY
*Rockwood studio was run by George G. Rockwood, who popularized the carte de viste (CDV) in America), and his brother Elihu R. Rockwood, a famous war photographer. They photographed the elite society of New York City in this era, including movie stars, politicians, and other rich and famous individuals.
*Alice Fox (1885-1971) {date of birth seems incorrect as there are known photos of her hand dated 1884} & brother Austen Hoppin Fox (1877-1946) were the children of the affluent New York lawyer Austen George Fox (1849-1937) and Alice Hoppin Fox (1857-1933) *Alice would marry John Carl Arpad Gerster (1881-1874), one of the founders of The American Cancer Society, originally American Society for the Control of Cancer.
