small dogs or older cats no longer need help to get up onto the bed or into the car. metal bars with sturdy canvas stairs, very easy to carry with attached strap. my dog outgrew it before we barely had a chance to use it so it's in perfect condition - he prefers to jump up. holds up to 100 lbs, but I wouldn't use it for a dog beyond 40lbs-- in my opinion.

tshowen @pattio143 if someone was good with pliers/tools to remove a step it would be possible, but it isn't designed to be adjustable.
