CHARMING 1950s' NAVY/WHITE STRAW HAT WITH GROSGRAIN TRIM AND VEIL

This is indeed a unique small hat, typical of the 19450's. It consists of a short and flat crown surrounded by two short brims...the top brim is the same navy straw as the crown, and the under brim is made of white straw. Around the crown there is a navy grosgrain band. At one side there is a beautifully created artful trim: It consists of a wire structure covered in grosgrain. The top of one end of this trim is made to look like butterfly wings, or a flower, and the rest of the wire twists and ends in curls projecting upwards. Please see photos to appreciate it. Attached to the inside of the hat there are two fabric wire "stays" to help secure the hat in place. The look is finished with a navy long veil, which can be worn over the face, or placed on top of the hat. Throughout the 1950s, ladies wore hats daily as a part of their attire as was a pair of gloves. To preserve its market, the millinery industry set about creating variety and extravagance. Generally speaking hats remained small and close to the head. There is no label, indicating it was a custom-made creation.
