Waves murmured beyond the dunes, and Brownie—a scruffy, brilliant mix of Airedale Terrier and Boxer—bounded after a golden butterfly. His ears flopped wildly, eyes bright with focus. As the butterfly fluttered past a patch of tall grass, Brownie skidded to a stop, sniffing at something half-buried in the earth—just an ordinary stick. He tilted his head, nudging it lightly with his nose. But the moment his paw pressed against it, the world trembled. A pulse of energy rippled through the air, bending light and sound in a way that made Brownie’s fur bristle. The stick flickered—then glowed. No ordinary wood at all. A swirl of violet and gold erupted overhead, and before Brownie could bark in surprise, the ground beneath him vanished. Whoosh! He tumbled forward, sucked into a portal that split the sky open like a curtain. He landed with a thump on mossy, crystalline ground.
