The Pilgrim Glass Corporation was a West Virginia glass company known for art glass, tableware & novelty pieces, particularly in art deco and cranberry glass styles.
Alfred Knobler, a ceramic engineer, acquired the Tri-State Glass Manufacturing Company in 1949 & renamed it Pilgrim Glass. Originally Pilgrim’s main product was hand-blown crackle glass, created by immersing hot glass in cold water. In the 1950s Pilgrim expanded its product line by hiring 2 Italian brothers, Alessandro & Roberto Moretti, who were exceptionally skilled at creating small glass birds, cats, ducks, horses, fish, whales, swans & elephants.
In 1968, the company began creating cranberry glass and quickly became the largest producer of cranberry glass in the world.
Pilgrim Glass closed its West Virginia plant in 2001, with Knobler unable to find a buyer for the business upon his retirement.
Legacy:
Blenko Glass Company created a historic preservation line that includes pieces inspired by Pilgrim Glass, paying homage to West Virginia's glassmaking heritage.
