Bob Vila's Home Again Season 8: The Craftsman Bungalow

Thirteen episodes on the restoration of a 1920s Sears kit Craftsman Bungalow, Studio City, CA 1997. You see every major step of the project, which includes some remodeling to accommodate modern tastes. However, many built-in cabinets, trim and floors are restored to original finishes; authentic period cabinets are added; exterior trim and columns are repaired or reproduced to add a covered deck that looks out on a stunning new swimming pool. In one episode you go with Bob on a tour of Hollyhock House, a Frank Lloyd Wright design, as it looked in 1997 before its last major restoration; the moat in front of the fireplace is still filled with water. In a later shows you visit the Huntington Japanese garden in San Marino and see how the same principles are used to create a tiny Zen garden for the restored bungalow. You watch intricate mosaic tile being installed in kitchen and bath and observe stained glass windows being soldered to create a mock skylight for the living room. Before HGTV, Bob Vila was the man to watch to learn about home construction and restoration. This show set a high standard for the genre rarely achieved today. You cannot stream this program currently, and it is not scheduled for showing on any channel, although snippets are available online.
