This gray sport coat is crafted from a traditional suiting material, offering a timeless design with notched lapels and a structured shoulder line. He was known for his "pioneering soft-shouldered jackets with slim waists, arresting combinations of just-off colors, and zippers going up the fronts of his vests." Beginning in 1986, Robinson’s designs were manufactured and marketed by the Bill Robinson sportswear division of Bidermann Industries, based in Paris. He worked for various design houses, including Anne Klein, Valentino, Gloria Vanderbilt, and Yves St. Laurent, and served for several years as chief designer of Calvin Klein’s menswear collection. He left Klein because he said he “wanted to take the line a little over the edge,” with checks, stripes, and paisleys, while Klein favored a more conservative approach. Unfortunately, Robinson became sick in 1991 and would produce his last collection called the “Best of Bill Robinson” shortly before he died in 1993. He will be remembered for his forward-thinking contributions to the evolution of men’s style. His softened shoulders, body-conscious knits, and more casual designs set a new standard for menswear.
