This beautiful sample of the millinery fashions of the 1940s' is made of wider black straw strands woven in a beautiful way. The crown is round and short, and the brim is wide and upturned at one side, giving it an asymmetrical shape, covering one eye. There its a black grosgrain band around the crown. An amazing feature are the burgundy feather "wings" that extend forwards and towards the back. To complete the look there is a red rhinestone brooch in the shape of a bow. This is a stunner!
The wartime 40’s saw a huge variety of hats that were suitable for any face shape, hairstyle or personal preference. Throughout the war & on both sides of the Atlantic, elaborate creations brightened dreary utility fashions, brought about by rationing. The only items not rationed were hat materials. Explosions of feathers, veiling & artificial flowers were popular.
Label: Union made, plus some numbers
This is an authentic piece of fashion history! This hat is in wonderful vintage condition & has been lovingly preserved among over 1300 vintage hats we have collected for 40+ years. Feathers, straw, flowers & veils are fragile, given their age. Mannequin not for sale.
