I’ve discovered the most beautiful examples of mourning jewelry…truly wonderful pieces of macabre art. Quick lesson- real mourning jewelry is not just black.
It started in the Georgian era and reached its peak popularity in the Victorian age….mainly, lockets of hair were saved in brooches and pendants. But my FAVORITE is the teeth jewelry!! Woah, so cool. I wish I could find someone to make a ring for me….what a beautifully creepy way to honor our deceased love ones.
Full disclosure: some of the rings above are actually children’s milk teeth. Mothers saved their babies’ teeth and wore them as a nostalgic nod to their childhood years 💔😭 So cuteeeeee. If you know of anyone who can make these out of my kiddos’ teeth, hit me up! I’ve been saving everyone’s teeth for something🦷 beautiful!

@ckatila get some of your baby teeth! We will find someone who can do this. I wish my mom saved mine! I’m definitely gonna keep all the kiddos’ teeth now, lol. I would’ve even kept my dad’s if I would’ve thought about it then 😭 This is just too pretty. 💔

@juliekattke I can imagine a ring made of all three of your kids and then a stone would be so beautiful 😍 I'm definitely considering getting one made

@juliekattke I found a pair of gorgeous Victorian earrings that have little shaped pearls which were meant to be replaced with baby teeth but never were. I collect Victorian Locketts and over the years I’ve come across so much braided hair. Most people didn’t live past 35/40, right? (So I’d be dead) They were very sentimental people. Albeit by today’s standards these pieces would be considered “morbid” by some (🙄) they showed how deeply they loved each other. I think it’s beautiful.
Apr 09Reply

juliekattke
@rawluxe_world I agree 100%. The depths of love one would have to have in order to wear their loved ones’ biological matter….swoon!
Apr 09Reply

rawluxe_world
@juliekattke Right?!? I wish I was loved that much! WAIT! I just remembered Angelina Jolie & Billy Bob used to wear vials of each other’s blood around each other’s necks when they were married! And people do wear their loved ones ashes in little urns around their neck. But still very different. I love Victorian jewelry because I love thinking about who owned it and where they live and what their life was like.
Apr 09Reply

juliekattke
@rawluxe_world lol I remember the blood vials too!! That marriage didn’t last long… 😆 I have my daddy’s ashes in a sterling keepsake pendant. The funeral home charged me $495 for it! And it’s very simple and plain. That’s another reason I prefer the mourning jewelry from 1800s. They look like pieces of art! Especially the braided hair. ❤️
