The story behind The Cape mountain zebra is a rare protected species found in the south-eastern provinces of South Africa. Alice Shirley’s design is modeled on a foal that has wandered off to explore the fynbos, the unique vegetation of the southernmost region of the country. It grows in poor soil, and is regenerated by the bush fires sparked by lightning in the dry season. In spring, the fynbos transforms into a fragrant, multi-colored carpet of flowers, a dreamlike vista. The artist has reproduced almost forty different plants to create a sumptuous setting for the little zebra.
