Antique Victorian Cut Encased Cranberry Glass Condiment Cruet/Castor Set - Atkin Brothers, England
Exquisite antique Victorian castor/cruet set made of cut encased cranberry glass on a silverplate tray, made in Sheffield, England by English silversmiths, the Atkin Brothers in the late 19th century. Features two glass stoppered cruets, two castors, and a mustard jar. A little glass was used as an open salt. The clear glass around the cranberry glass is very thick giving a gorgeous effect. Glass pieces have no damage. The bottom of the silverplate tray is stamped with the Atkin Bros hallmark of a hand holding a bouquet, and also "EPNS (electro-plated nickel silver) and HA, EA, FA." This was made circa 1890 and the plating still looks great. Set weighs 5.5lbs and measures 9.5" high, 7" wide, and 6" deep.
The Atkins Brothers consisted of Henry, Edward, and Frank. They took over their father's spoon making business after his death. They produced a variety of good quality items in silver and silver plate. The initials of the three brothers were used on plated ware from 1853 to 1958. The Atkin Brothers business traces its origin to Thomas Law, a silversmith active in Sheffield from 1750 to 1775. He was one of the only two firms combining the trades of cutlers and silversmiths.
