Antique Turkish olive jars/ jugs are traditional earthenware terracotta clay containers; those with side handle were historically used for storing olive oil or wine, or general storage or transportation. The jug is hand made, the very slight imperfection in the shape as it tapers to the very bottom show it is not made by machine. It has two different clays, a darker terracotta at the top and a lighter on the body/ base, and a white-wash all over the jug. The white wash on a vintage Turkish olive jug is a patina that protects the terracotta clay from the weather and cools the food and oil inside.
