Antique The Works of Flavius Josephus: Antiquities of the Jews and a History of the Jewish Wars and Life of Flavius Josephus, written by himself and translated by William Whiston.
- Victorian edition of the works of Flavius Josephus, a Roman–Jewish historian and military leader. Josephus recorded the Great Jewish Revolt, including the siege of Masada. His most important works were The Jewish War and Antiquities of the Jews. The Jewish War recounts the Jewish revolt against Roman occupation. Antiquities of the Jews recounts the history of the world from a Jewish perspective for an ostensibly Greek and Roman audience.
These works provide valuable insight into first century Judaism and the background of Early Christianity. Josephus's works are the chief source next to the Bible for the history and antiquity of ancient Israel, and provide a significant and independent extra-Biblical account of such figures as Pontius Pilate, Herod the Great, John the Baptist, James, brother of Jesus, and possibly Jesus of Nazareth.
- Published c. 1878 by David McKay Publisher, Philadelphia
- Good condition for age. Cover has general surface wear consistent with age, however cover designs and gilt is well preserved. Pages inside are clean excepting some general yellowing and binding is tight. Bookplate of original owner inside front cover as well as a piece of the front leaf cut out - probably to remove a name/address.
