This bangle was brought back from a trip to Africa in 1955. It is silver tone metal, not sure what metal it is made from. Great condition for its age. It weighs approximately 4 Oz and is approximately 3 1/2 inches wide. From a smoke free home. The color of the bangle is silver, but the light from my camera makes it look gold/copper.
While many of us in the world know that these “bangles” are somehow linked to slavery and the slave trade, many of us are unaware of the exact history and circumstances surrounding their usage. Although the size and composition of these “bangles” have changed, their form remains the same. What is interesting about their prevalence and usage today, is that they still hold true to its original purpose of being a symbol of wealth. Some might look at the continuation of these pieces in the form of fashion accessories as a way of preserving and honoring their culture and history, however, others might look at it as a reminder of an unfortunate part of African history where Africans sold each other for a piece of metal. The last picture is an example of the color of the one for sale and how they were worn.
