This Victorian antique cast iron door stop of a pineapple is very rare and obscure. In my research looking for this door stop design, I did not find another one similar to this one. I found some w similar bases, all of Victorian age. I have found no markings of manufacture anywhere on this item. There are signs of use on the back and bottom of this item, indicating it has been used extensively over time.
There are no defects on this item. It is in perfect condition. Someone has applied round felt pieces around the border of the back to prevent any more wear and tare.
Doorstops have been widely used since Victorian times to keep a door stationarily open. The Victorians made door stops, like other household items, into pieces of art. Particular to the pineapple is that it
has become the international symbol of our hospitality.
The measurements of this doorstop are 10 1/2” high, 6” across at the base and 1 1/2” thick. It weighs 9 lbs. 4 oz.
Shaped like a giant pinecone with a voluminous crown, the pineapple immediately commands attention. While it once represented unreachable wealth, the fruit now represents warm welcomes, celebration and hospitality, especially in the South. Here’s how it got there.
Coveted for centuries by kings for its scarcity and stately appearance, and lusted after for its unadulterated meat, the pineapple became a worldwide obsession at the beginning of the 16th century. Europe’s royal houses paid thousands in today’s money for just one fruit.
