Antique Japanese Celadon Porcelain Brush Washer with Cherry Blossoms
Made in Japan between 1900-1940, this piece is a beautiful example of Asian antiques.
Japanese Moriage Ware (Late Meiji to Early Showa Period, c. 1890–1930)
A very fine handmade scholars object that was used to wash brushes of Japanese artists and calligraphers in the days gone by. Naturalistic form with a delicate celadon green glaze and hand painted interior with blossoming cherry trees. The flowers are white and light pink that curl around the bowl's interior base. Smooth and slightly textural to the touch. Very unusual naturalistic ribbed underside and foot rim. Feels truly handmade.
It's a lovely example of how functional items were often made with artistic beauty in mind.
Raised Enamel Decoration: The bowl's raised enamel detailing is characteristic of moriage, a technique involving the application of slip or enamel to create a textured, decorative surface.
Unmarked Pieces: Many authentic moriage items were unmarked, especially those produced for export. This lack of marking is common.
Color and Design: The light green glaze and floral motifs align with typical moriage aesthetics.
