This lovely carnival glass bowl was made by the Fenton Art Glass Company and was acquired by my grandmother as a young girl in the 1910s. The pattern is called Two Flowers, named for the two different types of flowers found in the design--not the number of flowers. Like its sister pattern, Stag and Holly, it is seen mostly in ball footed and spatulate footed bowls, rose bowls, and rare chop plates. The pattern appears on the interior surface of the bowl only; the exterior is smooth and has no pattern. Rendered in marigold, the vase has a ruffled rim with a gentle, expanded saw-tooth finish. The bowl has a medium to light iridescent rainbow finish, the hallmark of carnival glass. The bowl is in superb condition with no flea bites, chips or cracks.
Sophisticated, charming, elegant yet homey. The bowl is just 8" in diameter, and it stands just under 3" tall. It has pleasing proportions, and its compact size makes it the perfect touch of color and sparkle for any spot. I've kept oranges in it, it's a beautiful display for Christmas or Thanksgiving.
The bowl is unmarked. Fenton began marking the actual glass in 1970, but prior to that they used adhesive paper stickers that usually fell by the wayside during years of use. I am unable to date the bowl definitively other than my grandmother saying she acquired it in the 1910s; a similar piece on the Colleywood Carnival Glass website does date the Two Flower design carnival glass bowl as made prior to 1920.
