Beautiful locket from the Civil War era with daguerreotype photos set in each side of a man and a woman. This is an early type of photo development that dates back to the 1830s - 1860s. Perhaps they are a very handsome couple?
Etching on outside of gold filled locket is so detailed! No makers mark.
Snaps shut well and also opens easily. The photo of the woman appears to have gotten some air behind it, probably when it was originally set.
In very good antique wearable condition especially being over 150 years old! Some wear to the metal as shown in photos.

@poshem007 Hi! unfortunately I don't know more about the lovely people in the locket. I got this from a local estate sale a few years ago!

Is there any paper working stating it’s real and not a replica of some sort ?

@kitt3n_xd Hi! There is no paperwork for this piece, I got this at an estate sale and dated this based on the material, photo type and patina. I have other photo pieces from the same era and am positive this is not a reproduction ! I leave all pieces in as found condition to maintain original patina.

@emmaragan if bought and I took it to a place to get it authenticated and it’s was a replica would poshmark a approve a return ??

@emmaragan I’m gifting it to a historic professor so I’d be a tad embarrassed to give a replica to them and then I would have wasted my money
I hope that’s understandable

@kitt3n_xd I don't know what poshmark would do as I have never gotten a return for this reason! I am very confident in my assessment on the age of this piece, it has been a cherished part of my collection for years 😊

@emmaragan would you be able to go to a place to authentic it and have paper proof it it ?
Nov 18Reply

emmaragan
@kitt3n_xd I'm not sure where I could take this to obtain the paperwork you are looking for. Estate sales/ antique stores/ flea markets do not typically provide certificates of authentication. I have been a collector my whole life and try to capture each of my items as accurately as possible based on the knowledge I have accumulated over the years.

@kitt3n_xd You are welcome to seek an appraisal for this piece by a person you trust! Estate jewelers typically charge for this service and could confirm my assessment of the era and authenticity. Posh does free authentication on purchases over $500 but I am unsure of their available services under this threshold.

@csukel I never claimed this item was pure gold...The daguerreotypes being in such good shape makes this piece really wonderful and unique. I have seen similar prices on pieces with less clarity to these early photos which date this piece to between 1830s-1860s.
