Antique Cast Iron Riderless Horse Western Cowboy Bookends
Although the style of these riderless grazing horse bookends is not uncommon, this set is very unusual and appears to be early versions of the more common mass produced items.
They have very crude individualized reverses indicating hands on production compared to mass production.
Early riderless horse bookends are marked by Verona Steel Casting Company which opened in Pennsylvania in 1913.
Prior to that the company was known as General Casting Company (1905 to 1910).
These are likely very early test or production pieces from Verona or possibly as early as the General Casting Company.
Quality wise, they are less-refined than the Verona pieces but historically, these are fascinating pieces and are nice companions in a collection or display.
Overall, good condition casts with highly irregular reverses.
One piece has moderate corrosion on the reverse.
Both pieces have some corrosion on the stands, most notably on the bottom.
One piece weighs 2.16 oz, the other 2.04 oz.
