Black cast iron ice tongs by Peoples Ice Co, late 1800’s. Excellent condition, only minor rust at bottom hook part. See pics for condition details.
History: People's Ice Company was established in the Syracuse NY in 1870. During 1879, Charles Listman was a dealer in Pure Onondaga Lake Ice during the season commencing the 15th of May to June 1 and ending on the 15th of October. Customers were charged weekly rates and "season accounts" were due on August 1 each year. Listman's office was located at 170 Lock Street.
I found this item in an historical log cabin that we bought in the Adirondack mountains in 1985. The log cabin was 50 years old at that time. We sold the cabin in 1995 but kept the tongs. They have been displayed in my husband’s garage since then. We have not painted them or used them in all that time.
The text embossed on the top of the tongs reads - Family Ice Tongs Made For & Supplied By - on one side and - Peoples Ice Co. - on the other side.
They measure approximately 14" high x 17" wide outstretched.
