Antique Bisque Porcelain Penny Doll in Crochet Dress Made in Japan

1920's, bisque / porcelain flapper style doll, Japanese kewpie, penny doll featuring darling cheeks, expressive eyes and brows, and jointed arms. 5&1/2" tall. Age showing in slight loss of paint. Stamped Made in Japan. Manufactured as early as 1850, these intriguing little dolls were originally produced as VICTORIAN BATHING DOLLS called “FROZEN CHARLOTTE”; so named from a song about a Victorian era girl who went out dancing with her beau. She left without her wrap against her mother’s wishes and froze to death. Eerily darling! This one is larger than the popular penny dolls. Small crack on left hand otherwise in fantastic condition considering her age. She sports a hand painted swimsuit underneath her red crocheted cover up. I will include a stand. Endearing dollie.
