Antique 1888 Hardcover Book “Song of the Brook” Alfred Tennyson, Rare, Collectib

Antique 1888 book by Alfred Tennyson, The Song of the Brook, in a linen bound hardcover. The front of the book has the book title embossed in gold with an illustration of loose, simple flowers. And the book has a very pretty blue and gold liner inside cover that feels like wallpaper. The paper is thick end of high quality, there is a dedication inside to a beloved teacher during Christmas of 1892. Each page is stamped “Photogravure co NY”. Each pictorial pane has several verses within the idyllic landscape. Naturalism and romance and poetry were the fashion of that time. Each illustrated page is of a thick stock with an additional thin protective sheet over each picture. The poem speaks from a first-person narrative of a living brook and the book meanders meditatively through all the vistas and experiences that this brook encounters. “For men may come and men may go but I go on forever”. The last plate is a small oval attempting to capture the open seas. The pages edges are gilt. Size: 12” x 9”’ x 0.75” 14 illustrations. Condition: Good antique condition. Spine intact. Some scuffing / small tears to book cover edges. The gilt on the page edges is muted with age. All the illustrations are still crisp and were protected by the extra lining pages that the manufacturer had the foresight to include. There are original scuffings from the ink of the panes here and there and is an expected finding for this style of book illustration/stamping. NPK-25
