the strap doesn’t attach with links on the sides. It goes through the loops inside. You detach it by unhooking the adjustable connectors on the strap.

I posted two more pics. One of where the strap hooks through the loops and the adjustable hooks and the other of the side. There are no hold on the side because if you use it as a clutch you won’t have hardware sticking out. It’s a great bag at a great price in new condition. Very cool and versatile.
