belladoc GENESIS 32: Jacob’s mission was to make amends with Esau. He knew he had wronged his brother and now was afraid to return home as the Lord commanded him. Strategically, he gave various offerings to his servants to go ahead of him and give the gifts to his brother in increments. Esau was on his way to see Jacob with an army of 400 men! cont...

belladoc So Jacob sought the Lord when he heard this news, asking God to deliver him from the plans of Esau and also reminding Him of his promise to treat him well and to make his descendants like the sand of the sea. My question is, why didn’t Jacob seek the Lord prior to him hearing of his brother’s coming with 400 men? Why wait until he felt afraid before he sought God and reminded Him of His Word? cont...

belladoc Why remind God of His Word when the Angels of the Lord met him on his way and had already assured him that he would be protected? Did Jacob doubt the Lord’s promise to protect him? This seems like a prime example of a man showing a little faith. He demonstrated little trust in God because God already sent His Angels as an assurance to Jacob of his safety. Jacob surely was a wise man. cont...

belladoc He reminded God, as we know the Lord likes for us to remind Him, of His Word. Not only was Jacob wise in such manner with the Lord, he was wise when he divided his team of servants into 2 in case his brother came and overpowered him, he would only lose half his wealth. The magnitude of things Jacob sent to his brother was worth $24,000.00! This amount of money in this time is considered a good amount of money so just imagine the conversion in Jacob’s time. cont...

belladoc This proves the substantial amount of money Jacob had. Jacob’s wealth was independent of his father’s wealth, for Jacob had established himself while living in the company of Laban. It wasn’t until Jacob returned to his father, that he inherited his father’s wealth. The addition of his father’s wealth made him a considerably wealthy man. So Jacob wrestled, physically, with God asking for His blessing. How stunning is that! cont...

belladoc Jacob had the courage and audacity to challenge the Lord. During their wrestle, the Lord touched Jacob’s socket on his hip causing a dislocation and shrunken sinew. This left Jacob, who now earned the name, Israel meaning-God’s Prince, with a permanent limp. As a result, til this very day, the children of Israel do not eat the tendon. cont...

belladoc .Final note, it’s been said that whoever sees the face of God, will not live to tell the tale, but here we read something different. Jacob, now called Israel, wrestled with and saw the face of God. He even named the place where he saw God’s face accordingly. The name of the place where Jacob wrestled with and saw God’s face is called Peniel. What a blessing to see the face of God! Blessings and love~SophieBella3

belladoc GENESIS 33: A chapter of reconciliation. Israel’s fear was heightened when he saw his brother coming with 400 men. As such, he arranged his family and possessions in a manner of least to most favored. I take it he did so in case Esau decided to lash out against him, his favorite would be spared. He lined up the servants and their children, next was Leah and her children and last was his beloved Rachel and Joseph. cont...

belladoc My goodness, how obvious and heartbreaking it must have been for Leah to again have proof that Israel preferred Rachel and Joseph. Esau arrived in Israel’s presence and instead of violence, he embraced him with a huge hug. Both brothers wept and loved on each other. Israel was insistent on giving Esau gifts, but Esau wanted him to keep his gifts. Esau probably didn’t want the gifts because he was satisfied with what he had. cont...

belladoc What a great act of humility. Nevertheless, Esau finally agreed to take the gift because if he hadn’t, it would signify that he was still hostile toward his brother and that peace was not established. Israel, on the other hand, wanted to give the gift as I suppose a sign of love and to show gratitude for his brother’s forgiveness. cont...

belladoc @mistielee Hey Sweet Mistie :) So good to see yah sis :) Thanks a mill for your kind words. I so appreciate you. Genesis is a tough one for sure...lol A major chunk to bite off :) I figure once you have the foundation, you're well on your way. It leaves little room for error later on :) Wow, you're hubby is a distance away. That is challenging for sure, but also can be a good thing. cont...

So it's a good thing sometimes. Love & miss yah sis and thanks so much for your comment and encouragement. Hope you're doing well. Bless you my sweet Mistie :)

belladoc GENESIS 34: What a tragedy! The first rape recorded in the Bible. Dinah was violated by one of the Hivites, Shechem, who was the son of Hamor, a price of the land. Scholars have said that Dinah was around 14-15 years old when she was raped. Shechem was probably a man who felt a sense of entitlement because of his father’s title and as such he did what he wanted when he wanted. After taking Dinah, he instructed his father to get her as a wife for him. cont...

belladoc
belladoc Note, he didn’t ask, he requested! That to me makes it seem as if he was really a spoiled person who felt entitled to various things. We read that Jacob kept his composure when he heard the news. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think most fathers would’ve been able to hold their peace after hearing their daughter had been raped and is being held captive. Such display takes great self-control and wisdom. cont...

belladoc If Jacob would’ve responded negatively, more harm might have afflicted Dinah and he may never have seen her again. Notice how the Bible says his sons came when they heard the news and how the sons were the ones to speak to Hamor on behalf of their father and for their sister. cont...
Oct 06Reply
belladoc
belladoc This makes me think that Jacob was so distraught that he couldn’t bring himself to speak. He was probably so weak in the knees and sick to his stomach that he lacked any strength to say a word. Not to mention how fearful he probably was to know that his daughter was being held captive. My word! Here’s another thought as to why Jacob may have kept silent. Recall that God changed Jacob’s name to Israel, taking away the name that means, “deceiver”. cont...
Oct 06Reply
belladoc
belladoc As such, maybe Jacob did not want to take part in any deceptive plot of his sons. So instead of reverting back to who and where God brought him from, he decided to remain silent. My mother always says, “If you have nothing good to say, don’t say anything at all!” That might have been the case here. cont...

belladoc Shechem told Jacob that he could name his price and he’d give him all he asked for if he’d give his daughter to him. I wonder, was that supposed to make things better? Scholars have said that Simeon and Levi were especially upset as they were the ones to act. Why not the others? cont...

belladoc I’m not convinced that they were the angriest and as such, that’s why they reacted. Couldn’t it be possible that maybe they were the bravest? Or could it be that maybe they were the tyrants of the bunch? Or maybe they were the least forgiving of the lot? Or maybe even the most religious and they justified a lack of action as an insult to God by saying that justice must be served? Maybe they were the “hotheads” of the bunch; quick to react. cont...

belladoc Or maybe they were the most militant and stern of the brothers. Those are just a few of my thoughts. Nevertheless, my mission is not to argue, dispute or try to disprove another’s theory, I’m merely just stating my thoughts. Anyhow, look at the plan they cleverly devised. They used religion as a cover to say, if the men would become circumcised, they would take them up on their offer. cont...

belladoc
belladoc So they led the Hivite to believe they would be at peace with them if they’d conform to their ways. Hamor was dealing deceitfully with the men. His intention was to rob Jacob of his wealth. He even got the locals to agree with his plan. Thank God Jacob’s family was smarter than them. They waited until the men were vulnerable after their circumcision and then 2 brothers killed all the men in the area, rescued their sister, enslaved the women and children and took their wealth! cont...
Oct 06Reply
belladoc
belladoc They had no intention of mixing with the Hivites as they were to be a pure people. Look at the craftiness of Satan. He knew God’s plan was to have a son be born of a virgin from the pure Adamite stock and as such, Shechem became Satan’s instrument in the rape of Dinah. After the sons committed their act, Jacob fell prey to anger, fear and lack of faith. cont...

belladoc He told his son’s that they’re a small bunch and basically, the Canaanites and Perizzites, remember, the giants and sons of God, will kill him and his household. Yea of little faith. Didn’t God tell Jacob that He would always be with him and He will bless him as He did his forefathers? Had Jacob believed this, he wouldn’t have spoken the way he did to his sons. I must say, the son's rebuttal was one of power, ending the chapter with a bang! cont...

belladoc GENESIS 35: Some say it isn’t necessary to have a sanctified place for the Lord, but that is false. This chapter starts out with God instructing Jacob to go the Bethel and build an altar to God. If God ordered it, then surely it is warranted. “Arise,” God said to Jacob when He instructed him to go up to Bethel and then we read Jacob using the same word, “arise” as he instructed those of his household. cont...
Oct 07Reply
belladoc
belladoc It seems to me that arise when used in this context somewhat implies to be elevated in spirit. To come out of the dark and go to the light, hence God saying go to Bethel which means, the House of God. This notion of coming out of the dark or sinful way can be supported when we read (V. 2) when Jacob instructed them to put away their foreign gods, purify themselves and change their clothes. My question is this, is this the first time Jacob instructed them to be “pure”? cont...
Oct 07Reply
belladoc
belladoc If so, why didn’t he tell them to rid themselves of those things prior to God instructing him to go up to Bethel? Also if he didn’t mention this prior, why was it not mentioned? Was it ok for them to live in sin? Did he turn a blind eye to their sinful ways? Here’s a stretch, was Jacob himself also living in sin? Practicing idolatry maybe? Just a thought. So they departed and while on their journey, both Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, and Rebekah died. cont...

belladoc It’s not mentioned how Deborah died, but Rebekah we know died in childbirth. As she labored intensely, she somehow managed to name her last child before she died, Ben-Oni meaning son of my sorrow. What a terrible name to have attributed to oneself! Thank God Jacob was wise enough to change his son’s name to Benjamin meaning son of the Right Hand. cont...

belladoc Can you imagine the life he would’ve had if his father didn’t change his name and/or if Benjamin didn’t do as Jabez and pray for the removal of the negative? My word. God spoke to Jacob when he left Padam Aram and blessed him. cont...

belladoc Again the Lord told Jacob that his name will no longer be Jacob, but instead he will be called Israel. This is not the first time the Lord told Jacob that his name is now Israel. Was Jacob, not accepting of his name or was God just giving him sort of a heads up in the previous chapters when He told him of his name change? cont...
Oct 07Reply
belladoc
belladoc I wonder if it had to do with Rachel’s passing why now he is actually being called Israel. Note that Jacob is called Israel after we read that Rachel passed. Maybe that was God’s way of saying, here’s a new beginning. Maybe God was showing Jacob that the new chapter will start with his new name. Just a thought. Either way, this is the first time we see the Bible refer to Jacob as Israel (V.21) after the Lord told him of his name change. cont...

belladoc Again we see the Lord reassuring Jacob of his and his descendant’s future blessings. All this the Lord told him in person. We prove this when we read in verse 13 that God went up from him, indicative of God having a physical body. Jacob named the city where God spoke to him, Bethel meaning house of God. He also built an altar, poured a drink offering on the altar and then anointed it with oil. This is the first time we read of a drink offering being given. cont...

belladoc GENESIS 36: This chapter gives an account of the genealogy of Esau and Seir, the father of a sect of giants known as the Horites. The main things that jump out at me are the fulfillment of Esau’s prophecy when God said that he will live by the sword. Another thing is how Esau, once his possessions were great, he departed from Jacob. Their livestock alone was too much for both of them to dwell in the same region. cont...

belladoc GENESIS 37: One of my favorite stories in the Bible, the story of Joseph. Joseph was the model son. He did as his father wished and didn’t go against Israel’s wishes. Joseph, the first son Rachel bore, was his father’s favorite as his mother was Israel’s favored wife. This favoritism Israel showed Joseph caused a deep hatred toward Joseph among his brothers. Verses 4, 5 and 8 state how much the brothers hated Joseph. cont...

belladoc
belladoc Envy, strife, hatred and jealousy among siblings are generally a result of the parents showing preference to one child over the others. It’s not good when parents make it obvious that they prefer one child over another as the least favored child/children will hate the favorite. It was not a god thing Israel did when he set Joseph apart. It was so blatant that he even made Joseph a coat of many colors. This indicated that Joseph obtained the birthright. cont...
Oct 09Reply
belladoc
belladoc A coat of such kind was only to be worn by the chief and the heir. The brothers hated Joseph’s ability to dream, his upstanding character and the position he obtained by his father. Some scholars have said that Joseph was naïve and that is why he shared his dreams with his brothers. This is definitely plausible. However, I wonder if maybe Joseph was quite aware of his doing and maybe was being a bit mischievous, wanting to brag to his brothers that he would be above them? cont...
Oct 09Reply

belladoc Maybe Joseph was bragging and showing off his skills of being a dreamer and dream interpreter. Just a thought. Nevertheless, it’s important to note that as young as he was, approximately 17 years old, Joseph had the ability of prophecy. When Joseph told his father of his 2nd dream, his father rebuked him. Israel did so in attempts to help alleviate the hatred of his brothers and because he was ignorant of the matter. cont...

belladoc Israel being a man of God, despite his ignorance, he kept Joseph’s dream in the back of his mind. He didn’t discredit his son’s dreams; he held it as a divine sign of what was to come. V. 11 states that his father kept the matter (Joseph’s dream) in mind. I wonder if he did so by the conviction of the Holy Spirit? Maybe the Holy Spirit convicted his spirit and as such, he couldn’t shake the thought. God always gives us support. This is seen when Joseph had his dreams. cont...

belladoc The dreams were a preview of what was to come in preparation for the hardship he would soon endure. The dream was something Joseph would be able to stand on until the time of the manifested vision. The brewing trouble was well on its way and the plot to kill Joseph was well crafted by his brothers. Israel sent Jacob to check on his brothers and return with a report. He used Joseph for tattletales which I’m almost positive the brothers knew. cont...

belladoc Joseph was old enough to be in the field with his brothers, as Benjamin was the only young one. So why then wasn’t he in the field with his brothers? Why was he available for his father to send him out to report on his brothers? Sounds to me as Joseph was his father’s pet. Joseph went out looking for his brothers and when he found them, the brothers decided to get rid of him. They actually planned to kill him! cont...

belladoc Had it not been for God using Rueben and Judah, Joseph would’ve been murdered! I think most people attribute Joseph’s saving grace to Ruben, when in all actuality, Judah was also a reason his brother was spared. Is it a coincidence that the oldest and the youngest of Leah’s 1st lot of 4 sons were the ones to stand against the plot? Remember, with God, there are no coincidences. Ruben told his brothers to cast Joseph in the pit without killing him. cont...
Oct 09Reply
belladoc
belladoc This was so he could deliver Joseph back to their father. Scholars mention that maybe Ruben thought this way due to the sin he committed when he slept with his father’s concubine which of course was disgraceful in the sight of his father. That act probably grieved his father and in attempts to make amends, he deiced to deliver Joseph. This could very well be the case, however, I think cont...
Oct 09Reply
belladoc
belladoc despite Rueben’s previous sin, he was just a person of great character. Most of the great fathers of the Bible committed some sort of sin in the eyes of God. That did not discredit their love for God. Next, there’s Judah who told his brothers that there would be no profit for them if they killed their brother. Instead, he suggested they sell him to the Ishmaelites. cont...
Oct 09Reply
belladoc
belladoc There’s a possibility that maybe he did really just want the money for his brother and cared nothing about Joseph’s life, but there’s also a possibility that he crafted that idea as a way to throw off his brothers. Maybe he came up with that idea as a way of trying to save Joseph’s life. Ruben planned to return Joseph to his father, but when he went to the well in search of him, Joseph was nowhere to be found. cont...

belladoc Judah, on the other hand, didn’t intend to return his brother, but instead, planned to save his life by sending him away from the brothers. Look at God’s hand in the whole thing. Each time the brother’s plotted to kill Joseph, God took a brother to stand against it! When Ruben’s plan failed, Judah stepped up and crafted another! Were the 2 brothers in cahoots? Did they discuss how to save their brother? cont...
Oct 09Reply
belladoc
belladoc My question is, was it really 10 brothers who were envious of Joseph or was it really only 8? Was it that Benjamin, Ruben and Judah were the only ones not against Joseph? Just a thought. Nevertheless, regardless of the 2 brother’s agenda, the conclusion would be a way of saving his life. A few final notes. When Joseph was far off and his brothers spotted him, they said, “Look, this dreamer is coming. Come therefore, let us kill him…” cont...
Oct 09Reply
belladoc
belladoc They classified him as a dreamer, which was an acknowledgement of Joseph’s gifts. Whether they were mocking him or not, they couldn’t help but to acknowledge his ability. In life, many will come and try to kill your dream, but don’t let them. The brothers act is symbolic to those who are dream killers. (V. 19-20) They said here’s the dreamer (the dream), now let’s kill him (kill the dream)! cont...

belladoc
belladoc Note how his brothers sent the servants to give the report to their father and then they went to confirm. How cowardice is that! I mean, if you’re gonna do something, then be prepared to reap the consequences! In their confirmation, they classed Joseph as their father’s son and not as their brother. This is a clear picture of the tremendous amount of hatred they had for their brother. Total dissociation of their relationship. cont...
Oct 09Reply
belladoc
belladoc Notice that the brothers used the blood of a kid to smear Joseph’s tunic in their deception which is the same animal Jacob used when he deceived his father, telling him that he is Esau. There was no consolation for Israel after hearing of his Joseph’s death. V. 35 states that all his sons and daughters (in-laws) arose and tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. Notice how the Bible doesn’t include his wife as a comforter nor any of the concubines. cont...
Oct 09Reply
belladoc
belladoc I would think a spouse should be one of the main comforters. Was there no mention of this because Leah nor the concubines comforted him? If so, could this be because of Leah as well as the concubines, knew that Joseph was his favorite? Did this cause jealousy on their part toward Joseph? If so, this is horrible! Israel was in deep pain and depression, noted in (v. 35) when he said, “For I shall go down into the grave to my son in mourning.” cont...
Oct 09Reply
belladoc
belladoc So regardless of how they felt about Joseph, the fact remains that Leah’s husband and the concubine’s children’s fathers loss, warranted consolation. He must have been pretty awful because there were others who were wicked in God’s sight and yet their life was spared. belladoc Onan was obviously not pleased with having his child be the one to carry on his brother’s name and not his, so when he slept with Tamar, he allowed his ejaculate to hit the ground. That act displeased the Lord and God killed him as well. Another son killed because of his wicked ways. This left Judah with one son, Shelah. At this point, Judah told Tamar to go to her father’s home, remain as a widow and wait for his younger son to mature at which time he’ll have Shelah marry her. cont...

belladoc GENESIS 49: In this chapter, we read of the prophetic word spoken over Joseph’s sons. Notice how Jacob blessed Joseph and his 2 sons before he spoke to the other 11. Joseph was given the birthright that Jacob’s 1st born, Ruben, lost due to his weakness toward lust. Jacob called his sons to gather around him. I would think doing so would cause tension among the brothers, but either way, Jacob followed through. Of course, our God isn’t a God of chaos. cont...

belladoc He loves order and as such it would only be expected that Jacob would prophesy over his sons in their order of birth. A brief review of each son’s prophetic word. Son #1: Ruben, because of his unstable ways, he would not prosper. Recall that Ruben slept with his father’s concubine. So despite his good works of attempting to save Joseph, his sin prevailed. Sons #2 &3: Simeon and Levi, they had evil ways, Simeon worse than Levi. cont...
Oct 21Reply
belladoc
belladoc They were to be scattered among Jacob, meaning that Simeon’s land would be a part of Judah’s, he wouldn’t have his own. Levi would be given scattered cities among the tribes. Recall that they slaughtered the prince Shechem, the one who raped their sister Dinah. Jacob wanted nothing to do with their sin or to be held accountable for their grievous act. cont...
Oct 21Reply
belladoc
belladoc Son #4: Judah, his name means praise and as such his brothers would praise him; he’s God’s lawgiver. From Judah’s line Jesus Christ came. What a blessing! Many say Joseph was the most blessed, but I think Judah takes that title. Yes, Joseph received the birthright and was blessed by God. cont...

belladoc
belladoc He became the 2nd in charge of all of Egypt. Wouldn’t you say that having the Christ born from your line is the greatest blessing ever! Amen! Glory hallelujah. Just a thought. So Judah was the strongest tribe of all with Joseph equal in might. Son #5: Zebulun, would have mighty trades with Sidon and Tyre. Son # 6: Issachar, instead of giving up their land, they would pay tribute to the Arabs who repeatedly invaded their land. cont...

belladoc Son #7: Dan, the Danites would give in to low morals and begin to treat their invading neighbors unfairly. Son #8: Gad, would struggle during their attempt to retain their land. Son #9: Asher, would be blessed abundantly. Son #10: Naphtali, a tribe that would have great linguistic skills. Son #11: Joseph, well by now you know Joseph had been and would continue to be blessed. cont...

belladoc Full of prosperity, but burdened with numerous enemies which started with his own brothers. So it would be for both his sons as well. Son #12: Benjamin, this tribe would have warlike characteristics. They would be a force to be reckoned with. Finally, Jacob blessed all his sons and then instructed them to take his body back to the cave of Machpelah, where Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah and Leah are buried. Notice he still didn’t call Leah his wife. cont...

belladoc He merely said, “…and there I buried Leah.” What a very sad life Leah must have lived, knowing her husband didn’t have that love for her, the way she yearned. The Bible says that Jacob drew his feet up into the bed and breathed his last breath after saying those things. Blessings and love ~ SophieBella3

ladymaria @belladoc Hi and thank you for continuing to spread the Word of God. Love is such an emotional topic for us all and I was just thanking Jesus tonight that He loves me unconditionally and NOTHING can separate me from His LOVE. That goes for all my sisters, there is nothing like the love you know you have with your Heavenly Father. I love you'll, many blessings to you and yours! ☺💕🌈

belladoc GENESIS 50: So Jacob died and Joseph mourned deeply. He prepared his father’s body the way Egyptian’s prepared their dead, by embalming. Notice how it wasn’t mentioned that the other brothers mourned Jacob. I wonder why. Could it be they did mourn, but not as profoundly as Joseph? This embalming process took 40 days and the general mourning period is 30, so the Egyptians mourned him for a total of 70 days! cont...
Oct 22Reply
belladoc
belladoc Joseph sent word to Pharaoh after the days of the mourning to ask that he may take his father’s body back to Canaan. There was no opposition noted. It seems Joseph always received whatever he requested from Pharaoh. Notice that Joseph sent a message to Pharaoh seeking permission to go to the land of his ancestors to bury his father. He didn’t send others to ask because he was afraid to ask Pharaoh nor was it a result of deep sorry. cont...
Oct 22Reply
belladoc
belladoc Joseph sent word because he was not deemed presentable in the eyes of the Egyptians, as the Egyptians did not shave during times of mourning. Many dignitaries accompanied the family to the burial. Joseph while at the threshing floor, he mourned 7 days for his father. Israel was buried in the cave in Machpelah. Once Jacob was buried the brothers started to fear that Joseph would begin to treat them poorly due to his remembrance of the evils they did to him. cont...

belladoc
belladoc So they sent word to him saying that their father said he should forgive them and have mercy on them. One only thinks out loud whatever is in the heart. Since their nature probably would’ve caused them to treat Joseph poorly had the shoe be on the other foot, they figured he would do the same to them. Either way, Joseph reassured his brothers that no “retaliation” would occur. cont...
Oct 22Reply
belladoc
belladoc So basically, the brother thought Josephs good treatment when their father was alive was because of their father. Notice how Joseph humbled himself by saying is he in the place of God? He pointed out to the brothers that what they meant for evil, God meant for good in order to save many lives. He spoke kindly to his brothers and assured them he’d provide for them and their families. Joseph died at 110 years old. cont...

belladoc
belladoc He told the brothers that God would come and take them out of the land of Egypt. He made his brothers make an oath that when God does come to remove them from Egypt they must take his bones out of Egypt and back to the land of Canaan. This ends the reading of The Book of Genesis. Glory be to the Father, to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning so shall it be in the end, world without end, Amen! Blessings and love ~ SophieBella3
