This lot of 3 antique ink bottles are what’s called penny bottles, from the Victorian era of 1835 to approximately 1895. Back then, in order for bottles of ink to be sold for a penny, the containers had to be made in huge numbers & needed to be made inexpensively. These bottles were hand made in a 2 part mold, then simply burst off the blow pipe to finish. That resulted in a sharp top or “ burst lip”, that simply would have been corked & sealed with wax. The color is fun, & most burst lip bottles have trapped air bubbles in the glass, which adds to their charm! These very old bottles in these shapes are much more scarce to find, & they look just lovely in the sunlight! They can be used for plant propagation, mini bud vases, or whatever else you can think of!
- The square ribbed bottle measures 1-3/4” square x 2-1/2” H, & has the burst lip. It has magnesium in the molten mix, so it emits a peach glow under UV exposure.
- The rounded octagonal bottle measures 2-1/4”x1-1/2”, & has the burst lip. There’s uranium in the molten mix, so it emits a neon glow under UV exposure.
- The squat round “igloo” bottle is the most scarce to find, measures 2-1/4”x2”, & has the burst lip.
They’re priced to sell - Part of an extensive collection of antique inkwells, bottles, fountain pens, please view my closet for delightful accompaniments to these three Victorian teal green ice blue beauties!
