AMERICAN APPAREL
"I Like America And America Likes Me" T-Shirt
Unisex Youth Size 8
This rare T-shirt is printed with the title from artist Josephy Beuys' iconic conceptual artwork “I Like America And America Likes Me" or Coyote, which took place during the volatile Vietnam War era in 1974 at the René Block Gallery in NYC's SoHo. Beuys arrived by ambulance, wrapped in felt, and spent 3 days, 8 hours each, locked inside with a Coyote, gesticulating, trying to communicate with a shepherd's staff. Fifty new copies of the Wall Street Journal were added to the closed space, which the Coyote acknowledged by urinating on them. At times, the Coyote tore off his glove, ripped at the felt, then allowed Beuys to briefly embrace him. Upon conclusion, Beuys was carried away, loaded into the ambulance and driven back to the airport, his feet having never touch American soil. He wanted the only ground he touched in America to be the ground he shared with the Coyote, which he saw as America's Spirit Animal. He has said, “You could say that a reckoning has to be made with the coyote, and only then can this trauma be lifted." Beuys legendary "social sculpture" as he called it, is fitting now, perhaps igniting more dialogue during upcoming elections. *Beuys piece also inspired The 1975’s 2018 song of the same name.
Red, white and baby blue ringer tee is in excellent preowned condition as pictured. Youth 8 and Youth 12 listed, both purchased when American Apparel was in production in 2000s.
