Everyone from a 22 year old designer who has been in the biz for only a few months to a few of us who are on the cusp of 40 and have been fooling around with the design/construction world for years. Interesting to hear the younger peoples’ views on things, issues, etc. and nice to share our experience with them

curated_404 @wendyinnola however I will say, the one thing that struck me from the younger lot was their salary expectation. They all thought they should be making way more $ than what’s realistic and even thought that they deserved additional compensation for working on a project for a long time, when, in fact, that’s just called doing your job. Not sure why they think they deserve 6 figures at the ripe old age of 26 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have PTSD from having to wear floods in middle school (no long inseams back then) and no matter how hard I try, I can’t do higher than an inch above the ankle bone! I feel like Pee Wee Herman...

How tall are the people who wear these things? I can’t even pull Those Rag & Bone Boyfriend jeans I listed up above my hips to even try to button them. My legs keep going and the pants do not 😆 same with dresses and skirts. All the cute ones are made for girls who must be 5’4” or less

wendyinnola @curated_404 ENTITLED GENERATION. It’s unbelievable. I know I must sound like a crotchety old-timer but the inflated and unreasonable salary expectations you speak of - while totally true and rampant - are only the tip of the iceberg. Students now expect their professors to essentially be “on call” 24-7 to answer their emails and texts (when the answer is almost always in the syllabus or project brief anyway- should they have taken time to read it).

wendyinnola @curated_404 They expect to be able to turn work in late, but then receive instantaneous feedback on submitted drafts. And then there’s my personal fave: do shit work (or no work) all semester and then become energetically vigorous and dedicated all of a sudden to filing a grade grievance for a D which was probably a gift in the first place!! Girl you got me started again!! 2 mornings in a row!! 😂😂 .

wendyinnola @curated_404 Then there’s the whole passivity problem where they think a design exercise is something you can get “right” or “wrong” and rather than jump in and freaking MAKE SOMETHING (preferably thoughtful, beautiful, and well-crafted) they choose to interrogate the prof relentlessly trying to extract some imaginary list describing in detail what they need to do/ draw/ make to get an A on a given project. In other words, design it for them. I could scream sometimes😖.

Wait until they find out sometimes you have to do things crawl around on your knees scrubbing floor tile at 2am just to make sure a site is perfect for handover at 5am. It’s not so glamorous 😊

She felt entitled enough to have our parents buy her a house. I couldn’t afford to buy an apartment in Manhattan until I was 43. Yet it never occurred to me to ask my parents for money! I’m Gen X, she’s at the tail end of millennial, but she feels deserving of privilege. I don’t get it.

These kids at this dinner I was at legitimately were complaining that they worked on one project for 12 months without a raise. I probably didn’t do a good job at all feigning sympathy. wendyinnola @nikoneko EXACTLY!!!!! I couldn’t wait to work and earn my own money (and therefore independence!!) - not by necessity, but by choice!! Wanted to choose my own clothes and buy my own records (yes, vinyl my friends) and stupid expensive imported LP’s and British rock mags without having to whine or beg or justify to anyone! Been working full-time non-stop since age 15 whilst earning A’s in school.

Then there is all this talk of younger people not being able to find jobs, but the reality is, they simply don’t want to work. Jobs are available, but they aren’t the high-profile, glamorous jobs these young people seem to feel they deserve.

wendyinnola @nikoneko @curated_404 @fccandles They didn’t fit! What should she do?! I was very nice and very sympathetic but made it clear that returns are not an option!! I suggested she relist/ resell as I’ve had to do on numerous occasions because size 29 shorts arrived shrunk to a size 25. I figured my bad for not asking for actual measurements and so actually rated those sellers 5-Star for fast shipping!!!
