Selenite is a clear, glassy, well-formed variety of Gypsum, and in the dry desert environment, sand often becomes trapped within the crystals as they grow. The resulting formations can take on various shapes, such as the hourglass or the iconic "desert rose" shape. This striking form is also known as sand rose, rose rock, gypsum rose, or gypsum rosette.
