British Antiquarian Book “Good Things Made Said and Done” published in Yorkshire
a very very popular book offering recipes, housekeeping advice and as can be seen from the advertisements here Victorian snake oil!
the Martha Stewart, Oprah IG and TikTok of Victorian England!
this is the twenty second edition published in 1896 (there were apparently 44 editions)
I opened it to find the words,”DO NOT UNTIMELY DIE” if you take Freeman’s Cough syrup
There are exhortations to take phosphorus for your health !!!
also recipes for gingerbread, rabbit stew and other dishes apparently popular in Victorian England
I’m Not an antiquarian book expert but the cover is red and seems appropriate for its age.
As you can tell the binding shows wear and has partly separated from the pages.
There is some yellowing of its pages that is appropriate for its age.
There are wonderful yet creepy and startling advertisements and illustrations and advice
Despite all this there’s no odors and it’s a magnificent look at Victorian England culture ideal for Anglophile, and fans of Yorkshire as well as historians
also terrific for graphic artists and fans of typography
There were 42 editions published 1876-1914
