Talavera was introduced to Mexico by Spanish guild artisans of the Colonial period. Known as "majolica" in Spain, Mexican Talavera draws its name from the 16th century Spanish pottery center, Talavera de la Reina, where the art and science of ceramics flourished.
In Mexico, Talavera artisans borrowed the Old World intricacy and blue and white foundation but brought indigenous motifs to make their work distinctly Mexican.
Talavera ceramics are handmade and hand-painted in Puebla, Mexico, and are 100% lead-free. They are safe for the microwave, oven, and dishwasher, but hand-washing is always recommended for such fine ceramics. Talavera pottery is made for use but also for home décor.
