"THE CHIPPENDALE OVERMANTLE MIRROR" No. 209-GO This piece is in wonderful condition and comes in its original box. .According to the enclosed pamphlet that comes with the Overmantle Mirror: "It is believed by many authorities that Thomas Chippendale began his career with his father carving frames for mirrors and pictures. Certainly the fanciful character of much of his mature work suggests the possibility of this theory. The rococo frames that were introduced from France were elaborate concoctions laden with scrolls, flowers, leaves, shells, figures, and imitation rock-work. They were often surmounted with crowned crests or hung with trophies carved in high relief depicting symbols of hunting, music, art, or war. This one is adapted from the frame tabernacle from on the left-hand side of plate number CLXXXVIII, date 1760.
