kindnessqueen what does Hallmarks mean? I just bought a beautiful blue topaz and diamond gold ring up from a lady and she had it marked as 10 karat gold. Me and my husband both looked a thousand times and can't find any markings in it. I used a magnifying glass and even a small part in the bottom that magnifies by a thousand and I can see some letters but can't make them out. She said it was resized and that's why it's not there. Is that possible? Any way to test for gold at home?

billie_21502 @kindnessqueen Hallmarks are the type of metal the piece is and something it has the jeweler name stamped in it also. You might be able to find some suggestions on you tube on how to test metal at home. I really don’t know of anything but with a magnet.

billie_21502 @kindnessqueen magnet won’t stick to gold. And you are welcome but you can’t always go by the hallmarks either When I first start I bought a ring that was hallmark 14 kt gold and it was sterling silver. And older pieces don’t always have hallmarks

My husband and I got beautiful charms for necklaces down in Ocean City Maryland and I got the gold one and he got the silver one, identical matching pieces. We went to a jeweler month later and mine tested .925 sterling silver just like his did but I purchased it as 10 karat gold
