Eight strands of gold tone chain on each side of this 37-inch necklace come together in a knot from which hangs the combined total of 16 lengths of chain to form a 5-1/2-inch long tassel. Necklace culminates with a lobster claw clasp which makes it versatile to wear an extra wrap around the neck.
● Chains date back to at least 2500 BC, when the ancient Egyptians started threading gold and silver together. The oldest example of the chain necklace were found in ancient Babylonia (modern day Iraq), where royal tombs hid magnificent jewelry dating back to around 2500 BC. The chains found in this tomb were mainly versions of the perennial loop-in-loop, a technique that circulated throughout the Mediterranean, Western Asia, and eventually the entire world. Gold was bountiful in ancient Greece, where they started creating pendants to wear with the chains, and by 300 BC the elite upper class wore lavish jewelry with gemstones.
