Beautiful dish shaped like a butter dish, however I believe this is made for storing cigars or cigarettes. There are no chips or flaws of any kind, it was probably never used. This weighs almost 3 pounds by itself; a quality piece. Any questions, let me know.

It is a cigar holder (i have one). The lid flips over and rests on the open side of the dish for use as cigar rest/ashtray.

I thought it was a cigarette holder because of the age of it. Seems cigars were not that popular then
