The Cup's history dates back to 1998, when Ormond Beach's Joe Spikes began debating the golfing prowess of Americans versus Brits with friend Kevin Purtill. Purtill, a transplanted Irishman who now lives in Ormond Beach, is an official U.S. citizen yet suits up for the European side in the annual event. Sitting in the Ormond Beach Houligan's Pub, the pair expanded on their disagreement until, eventually, they drew up a plan for a competition involving fellow social golfers from both sides of the Atlantic. In the years since, the Loo Cup has alternated between LPGA International and Trevose Golf and Country Club in Cornwall, England.
