Battleship, also known as Battleships or Sea Battle, is a classic strategy guessing game designed for two players. Each player commands a fleet of warships, which they place on a ruled grid (either paper or a board). The locations of the fleets are concealed from the other player. The goal is to destroy the opposing player’s fleet by accurately calling “shots” at their ships. Historical Origins: Battleship has its roots in the French game L’Attaque, played during World War I. Parallels have been drawn to E. I. Horsman’s 1890 game Basilinda and Russian officers playing a similar game before World War I. The first commercial version was Salvo, published in 1931 in the United States. Other versions followed, including Combat: The Battleship Game, Broadsides: A Game of Naval Strategy, and Warfare Naval Combat.
