This etching by G.K. Richardson (English, active 1836-1895) entitled "Crow-Nest From Bull Hill", depicts a view along the Hudson River towards West Point. "The Hudson River School" - the first American School of Art, encompasses paintings and etchings by artists who were inspired by nature. These artists became known as "Nature Painters", and the Hudson River provided beautiful scenery to showcase in their artwork. This etching was colored by W.H. Bartlett (1800-1854). Hand coloring these etchings was considered a craft onto its own, hence his name (lower left), as well as the artist's name (lower right). The "antiqued" gold frame, soft light blue matting, glass, backing and etching are all in extremely good condition. Dimensions are approx. 14" wide x 12.5" high (the colored etching is approx. 7" wide x 5.75" high). Note: A similar engraving with framing of lesser value listed as sold at auction for $400.00. We obtained this artwork as framed several years ago through a silent auction benefiting the Hudson Valley. It makes an ideal gift for someone living in that area, someone with ties to West Point or the area, and especially someone with admiration for the Hudson River School or appreciation of nature.
