Elevate your dining experience with this exquisite 19th-century cake fork set from Fabrica de Toledo, crafted by the renowned fine jeweler and silversmith Spaulding & Co. of Chicago, Illinois. Nestled securely for decades within a sumptuous felt-lined storage roll, this set comprises 14 beautifully designed Arabesque Gothic Grotesque embossed damascene metalwork forks, specifically crafted for serving cakes and pastries.
Although much of the gilt surface—likely 14 karat gold leaf—has worn off the handles, the intricate embossed silver damascene metalwork over iron, along with what appears to be silver (possibly silver-plated) scalloped fork ends, remains in excellent condition. The inscription "FABcaDE TOLEDO" confirms their origin from Toledo, Spain, likely the Toledo Artillery Factory, which was known not only for its distinguished military weaponry but also for producing fine objects intended for export and diplomatic gifts.
What truly distinguishes these forks is their rarity and unique design. Unlike the typical complex flourishes and geometric patterns of the time, each fork features a tower of grotesque characters that are symmetrically interwoven and transform into elements such as insects, dragons, and mythical forms associated with fire, water, and wind. Accompanied by motifs like draped cloth, urns, and flowering vines, this metalwork not only serves as a remarkable conversation starter but also showcases your distinctive taste.
