A cel, short for celluloid, is a transparent sheet of acetate on which objects are painted for traditional, hand-drawn animation. These animation cels are from the short-lived 1987 television show “Sylvanian Families”. The Japanese toy company Epoch created the Sylvanian Families toys in 1985 - in North America they are known as Cozy Critters. In 1987, they were released in the UK and Western Europe to coincide with the cartoon series by DIC Entertainment. Only 26 eleven minute episodes were made and these two cels were used to make one of those episodes. One cel is of Ashley Evergreen (the bear in red) and the other cel has two of the Babblebrooks family, part of the Grey Rabbits.
An easy way to tell if an animation cel is real or just a reprint (or sericel) is to look for three holes along the top or bottom (a round hole in the middle and an elongated oval hole on either side). These holes are for pegs that hold the backgrounds and cels in place on an animation board while being filmed. There should also be writing or numbers near the holes to indicate which scenes and production they are from. As you can see from the photos, both cels have these holes and writing.
The cels come with a printed background (not original) and have been professionally matted - everything is in very good condition. The cels are approximately 10.5 wide x 9 inches tall and the mat is 14 x 12 inches. Be sure to check out my other listings for many unique and hard to find items.
