vs. N. Illionois is signed by 1973-74 Booster Don Phillips. The Jan. 26th Illinois program is rare as there were 3,500 empty seats as this was the 1st home game after the NCAA Investigation. Labeled Long Beach State Loyalty Day.
The sixth man on LBSU's best-ever team, the 24-2 team of 1973-74, Bobby Gross. Gross was the conference's Most Valuable Player and an All-America selection. Chosen in the second round of the 1975 NBA draft, Gross played professional basketball for seven seasons. He was a starting forward for the 1976-77 Portland Trail Blazers, who won the NBA ttitle. In the deciding sixth game, Gross scored 24 points.
