1970’s Vintage Cloissone Ring

This is a vintage (70’s) floral Cloissone ring. Cloisonné (French) is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork with colored/painted enamel. The decoration is formed by first adding compartments to the metal ring by soldering or affixing gold wires or thin strips placed on their edges. These remain visible in the finished piece, separating the different compartments of the enamel or inlays. Cloisonné enamel objects are worked on with enamel powder made into a paste, which then is fired in a kiln. This ring does have some chips in the enamel due to its age and wear, which can be observed in most of the photos, however it is not more “prone” to breaking and chipping because of this. There are no sharp edges and it is not really noticeable when wearing. As long as you aren’t intentionally slamming your ring into hard surfaces, it will not continue to chip.
