Here's your chance to own the most important error in the Lincoln cent series – the 1955 Doubled Die Obverse! Caused by a shift in the hub between impressions while making the obverse die, this spectacular error is dramatic and easy to see.
In 1955 a new one-cent tax on cigarettes added to a severe cent shortage, and the Philadelphia Mint worked 12 hours a day, 7 days a week to catch up. Amazingly, these dramatic 1955 Doubled Die Errors were spotted before they left the mint, but because they were already mixed in with other cents, they went into circulation. Ironically, Double Dies turned up inside of wrappers of cigarette packs in vending machines, as change for a quarter.
