1930s/1940s Peacock Design Zardozi Embroidered Gemmed Black Velvet Evening Bag

This exquisite Art Deco / Art Nouveau era black silk velvet evening bag is decorated with a rich 3D quality Zardozi embroidery on the front flap featuring a prancing peacock in the center surrounded by a beautiful floral design. It was handmade in India where peacocks are the country's national bird and a very popular motif. The embroidery is all done by hand in silver and gold metal thread and brilliant silk threads beneath. The back is embroidered with gold and silver metallic thread, following the same Zardozi style as the front. A short handle runs lengthwise across the top of the bag. The interior is done in black satin with one larger pocket on one side and two smaller pockets on the other, all trimmed in gold. The bag closes with two working snaps. It is in excellent shape.
