Measures roughly 8” tall x 3” deep x 2.5” wide. Hand carved from solid two tone (dark brown & blond) lignum vitae wood; it’s a jarring experience for the uninitiated/unsuspecting individual to pick this up for the first time, since it feels like picking up a brick of lead. It’s got a couple age-related shallow surface cracks on forehead/face. This beautiful antique Rasta man also has an excellent mullet hairstyle.
It dates back to 1830s/1840s Jamaica. Up until 1838, the “natives” of Jamaica were of African descent, brought over by the Spanish, and oppressed by their captors under slavery for centuries. The British eventually took rule of the island, and emancipated them from slavery. This was a celebrated time, due to the emancipation from slavery; during this period, increased freedom and access to resources contributed to the proliferation of Jamaican folk art. Sold as pictured.
